Creating a Least Cost Path Between Panama and Colombia
Least Cost Path Analysis and 3D Rendering
Between Panama and Colombia there is a large gap in the main road connecting both countries called the Darien Gap. This gap is due to densely forested areas, steep terrain, and the presence of larger water bodies which make building a road difficult and expensive. Using digital elevation data from the area, slope was calculated and used a variable, along with the presence of water, to calculate the least cost paths between larger cities within each country. These variables highlight some of the first estimates for a least cost path and more variables can be examined to study this area further.
